European Capital of Culture: 30th Anniversary Celebration

ICC Head of Research, Beatriz Garcia, will be contributing to an event held by one of this year’s European Capital of Culture hosts, Pilsen, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the birth of the European Capital of Culture project. The event will feature an afternoon panel discussion in which participants will consider the benefits of the European Capital of Culture (including its potential to contribute to the economic development of cities and promote the active engagement of local citizens). Here, Beatriz will feature as an expert panellist on programming challenges alongside Hanns-Dietrich Schmidt (Essen-Ruhr 2010, Paphos 2017) and Jiří Sulženko (Pilsen 2015). The panel discussion will be followed by a gala night to mark the event that will reflect on the past thirty years and look to what the future holds, with invited guests including the EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Tibor Navracsics, the Czech Minister of Culture, Daniel Herman, and representatives of past and future European Capitals of Culture.
