International Communication Association Conference

This event is on 19 May 2015

Simeon Yates, Director of the ICC, will be delivering a paper at a session on digital exclusion at this year’s International Communication Association Conference, which is being held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The International Communication Association is the largest international academic association for scholars interested in the study, teaching, and application of all aspects of human and mediated communication, and the annual conference offers members the opportunity to present research on the latest advances in the field of communication. The theme for this year’s conference is “Communication Across the Life Span” and will explore the various ways in which the study of communication provides a lens for interpreting the evolving meanings, relationships, experiences and critical crossroads of the life course.

Clearly, one of the most fundamental and significant worldwide challenges to communication across the life span in the digital age is the digital divide. For twenty years now, since the recognition of the digital divide through social scientific research in 1994, large percentages of the populations of countries around the world have been disconnected from the most important technological advancement in communication in a generation and the myriad opportunities it facilitates.

As such, the papers for this conference session look at the international impact of the digital divide and the distinct relationships between information and communication technology and marginalised populations across an extensive range of phases of the life span.
