Rio 2016 Cultural Olympiad field research

This event is on 4 August 2015

In August, ICC Head of Research, Beatriz García, will conduct field research in Rio de Janeiro as the city prepares to host next year’s eagerly anticipated Olympic and Paralympic Games.

With Rio in the midst of its ‘one-year-to-go’ celebrations, Dr. García will conduct a series of interviews and meetings that focus on the preparations being made for the 2016 Cultural Olympiad, with these discussions including:

• Carla Camurati (Director, Rio 2016 Cultural Olympiad) and her team
• The Rio Olympic and Paralympic Organising Committee’s Education Department
• The Rio Secretary of State for Culture
• Brazilian cultural organisations from Rio and São Paulo

Besides documenting and making sense of the development of the Rio cultural programme to date, these encounters will seek to consider how the city can best capitalise on the cultural legacy of its year as Games host, as well as how these legacies can inform the evolution of Brazilian cultural policy more widely.

This period of field research will be followed, on 5 November, by an event at the Museum of Modern Art, São Paulo, where Dr. García, as keynote speaker, will discuss opportunities for nationwide cultural legacies and cultural policy development throughout Brazil in the aftermath of the Olympic & Paralympic Games.
