Success of Cultural Olympiad Reinforces Britain’s Reputation as a World Leader in Culture

Led by the ICC’s Head of Research, Dr Beatriz Garcia, the report which examines the impact of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is released today.

Established as a four year, UK-wide programme, the 2012 Cultural Olympiad was the largest cultural programme of any Olympic and Paralympic Games with a geographical scale unmatched by any previous UK cultural festival. The finale of the Cultural Olympiad was the London 2012 Festival, a 12-week nationwide celebration running from 21 June – 9 September 2012, the largest UK-wide festival ever staged.

7^th Young Cultural Policy Researchers Forum:

Call for applications now open

The European Cultural Foundation, ECF and ENCATC, the leading European network on Arts and Cultural Management and Cultural Policy education, have today officially launched the call for applications for the 7^th Young Cultural Policy Researchers (YCPR) Forum. Aimed at providing young/early career cultural policy researchers with the opportunity to meet fellow researchers, share their experiences and analyse topical research issues regarding content and methodology, the YCPR Forum will be held in Brussels from 4-5 November 2013.

The Forum will bring together 45 promising young cultural policy researchers and Ph.D students drawn from a wide range of countries from across Europe and beyond. They will be joined by renowned cultural policy academics, researchers and experts from around Europe to share their experience and provide guidance to those young researchers at the beginning of their careers.

This unique initiative in Europe aims to promote and stimulate trans-border exchanges among young/early career cultural policy researchers and on a long-term basis contribute to the development of a strong network of European cultural policy researchers.

This year’s group of YCPR Forum researchers will be invited to attend the 10^thCultural Policy Research Award ceremony and celebration of the in presence of outstanding academics, researchers, policy makers and leading arts managers.

With the ambition to create strong connections and synergies between young and experienced researchers, the 2013 YCPR Forum will be immediately followed by the 21^st ENCATC Annual Conference to be organised in Brussels and Antwerp from 5-7 November. YCPR Forum applicants are also encouraged to attend the ENCATC Annual Conference and apply to present at the 4^th Annual ENCATC Research Session to be held in the framework of the ENCATC Annual Conference.

The YCPR Forum is an initiative developed by the European Cultural Foundation and ENCATC, as part of a larger collaborative project involving the Cultural Policy Research Award (CPRA) and the Online Young Researchers Forum.

Young/early career researchers interested in participating in the YCPR Forum must submit their application by the 7 June 2013 deadline. Attendance to the YCPR Forum is free of charge. Nine young promising researchers will receive a travel and/or accommodation grant to attend the 7^th YCPR Forum in Brussels, chosen based on their research abstracts and submitted letters of recommendation.

House of Memories

Evaluation of House of Memories Northern Model

The ICC has been commissioned by National Museums Liverpool (NML) to evaluate its acclaimed House of Memories initiative as it is rolled out to three separate and distinct museum and gallery services across the north of England. Funded by the Department of Health, House of Memories is a tailored dementia care training programme, which uses artistic interpretation, curatorship and reminiscence therapy techniques to raise awareness of the condition, and enable professional health services, carers and families to help those directly affected live well with dementia.

Post Doctoral Opportunity at University of Liverpool

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has an AHRC funded 3-month postdoctoral research vacancy. Candidates must have recently completed their PhD (including waiting for examination) and be available to start from 14^th February 2013.

The Project will involve working with Department of Philosophy, Liverpool Biennial, FACT and the Bluecoat on the project ‘Patterns of Thought: Art and Philosophy for Children and Families’ to critically reflect on events as part of the Biennial 2012 whilst demonstrating the benefits of collaboration with the research base for longer-term research projects and planning future Biennials and festivals.

This project provides a fantastic opportunity to work with cultural organisations at an early stage of your career – projects will be supervised by academic researchers at the University as well as colleagues working in the external organisations. Time will be spent across all partners during the 3 month project.

European Capital of Culture – Long Term Effects

European Capital of Culture – Long Term Effects Dr Beatriz Garcia has been awarded a contract from the European Parliament to investigate ‘The Status of ‘European Capital of Culture’ – Long Term Effects’. This project builds on Dr Garcia and the ICC extensive experience at the forefront of academic and consultancy research on the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) programme for more than a decade; our role contributing to key academic, practitioner and policy networks across Europe to maximise knowledge exchange and the dissemination of key findings; and our role as expert advisors to encourage the replication of best practices in ECoC research and evaluation – particularly, via the testing and development of an ‘European Capital of Culture Impact Research Framework’. The project involves a comprehensive study into the long-term effects of hosting a European Capital of Culture (ECoC), and the potential policy implications of these findings. This is a very timely issue to address given that by the end of 2013, the European Parliament and the European Council must determine the future of the ECoC programme beyond 2019. The ICC study will inform the European Parliament approach and will influence upcoming political and legislative action in this area

Institute of Cultural Capital Success at MeCCsa 2013

The ICC team of Kerry Wilson, Head of Research Cultural Leadership and Action, Beatriz Garcia, Head of Research Cultural Policy and Impact and Sue Potts, Communications and Relationships all participated at the Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Association conference 2013. The conference was held at the University of Ulster based in Derry, Northern Ireland. This year’s theme was Spaces and Places of Culture which complemented the launch of the UK City of Culture 2013, awarded to Derry.

Beatriz Garcia opened the conference with a key note speech about the impact of the Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture 2008. She explained the positive change of perception of the city demonstrated by a media analysis undertaken by the IMPACT 08 research programme. The presentation highlighted the possibilities for rebranding city profiles within the context of mega events and festivals.

Kerry Wilson chaired a thought provoking panel concerning the representation of history and heritage in public broadcasting. The panel discussed heritage programming; the NHS represented in documentary and drama; and the public perceptions of social life in Sweden as developed in post war media.

Sue Potts presented a paper which highlighted the positive effects of Community Radio on volunteer broadcasters. The paper titled – Sense of Belonging and Place described the increased sense of identity, shared values and civic participation as described by participants at Liverpool Community Radio Station during a study undertaken in May 2012. Centre for Health, Arts and Sciences

The ICC is an affiliate of the new Centre for Health, Arts and Sciences based at the University of Liverpool.

The research centre is led by Professor Gillian Howie, who is the Head of Philosophy at the University of Liverpool and the Principal Investigator on the AHRC funded New Thinking on ‘Living with Dying’ Network project.

Gill is supported by Professor David Pilgrim, a Professor of Health and Social Policy at the University of Liverpool. David’s research interests include: Mental Health Policy; Medical Sociology; Trust in Organisations; Organisational Development; History and Philosophy of Psychology; and Public Mental Health.

Dr Ciara Kierans is a Medical Anthropologist currently working in the Department of Public Health and Policy at the University of Liverpool also supports the network. Her research interests focus principally on new medical technologies, in particular organ transplantation and its bio-political consequences. She has conducted ethnographic research on this topic in Ireland, the UK and most recently Mexico. She has further research interests in social justice and the role of the state in health care and contemporary critiques of the ‘new’ public health.

Finally, Beatriz, together with Professor Andy Miah have edited and contributed to the 14 volume of Culture@the Olympics. which this year is mainly dedicated to reflections on the London 2012 cultural dimensions.
