Institute of Cultural Capital Success at MeCCsa 2013

The ICC team of Kerry Wilson, Head of Research Cultural Leadership and Action, Beatriz Garcia, Head of Research Cultural Policy and Impact and Sue Potts, Communications and Relationships all participated at the Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Association conference 2013. The conference was held at the University of Ulster based in Derry, Northern Ireland. This year’s theme was Spaces and Places of Culture which complemented the launch of the UK City of Culture 2013, awarded to Derry.

Beatriz Garcia opened the conference with a key note speech about the impact of the Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture 2008. She explained the positive change of perception of the city demonstrated by a media analysis undertaken by the IMPACT 08 research programme. The presentation highlighted the possibilities for rebranding city profiles within the context of mega events and festivals.

Kerry Wilson chaired a thought provoking panel concerning the representation of history and heritage in public broadcasting. The panel discussed heritage programming; the NHS represented in documentary and drama; and the public perceptions of social life in Sweden as developed in post war media.

Sue Potts presented a paper which highlighted the positive effects of Community Radio on volunteer broadcasters. The paper titled – Sense of Belonging and Place described the increased sense of identity, shared values and civic participation as described by participants at Liverpool Community Radio Station during a study undertaken in May 2012.
