Institute wins funding to work with UK Cities of Culture
We’re delighted to announce that we’ve received funding from the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) for a twelve month project called ‘Connecting Communities via Culture-led Regeneration’. This will enable us to establish a research network which brings together the cities shortlisted for the first UK City of Culture (UKCoC) scheme in 2013. Together the network will explore issues around the motivation, incentive and momentum in bidding for UKCoC status. Specific objectives will include:
- Comparing experiences of the bidding process within and across cities
- Considering the relative impact of bidding for UKCoC status upon:
- The policy-making process in city contexts
- The role of the creative economy in energising city strategies
- City-wide connections between different communities, e.g. governing authorities; businesses, services and professions; creative and cultural organisations; and neighbourhoods - Discussing the implications of not winning.
Kerry Wilson from the Institute will lead the project, working with Ian Grosvenor from the University of Birmingham, and Dave O’Brien from Leeds Metropolitan University. Work begins in the next few weeks, so watch this space for updates.
