Kaunas to be the European Capital of Culture 2022 in Lithuania

Added on Thursday, March 30th, 2017

In 2022, Lithuania will host its second European Capital of Culture year, following the decision to award the title to the city of Kaunas.

Six Lithuanian cities initially applied for the coveted award, with a pre-selection meeting in June 2016 shortlisting Kaunas and Klaipėda. On 29 March, however, at the final selection meeting in Vilnius, the selection panel of 10 independent experts — including ICC Head of Research, Dr Beatriz Garcia — announced Kaunas as the winner.

Dr. Garcia was appointed last year by the European Commission as a selection panel member for the period 2017-2019 — a role which will see her involved in pre-selection, selection and monitoring of European Capitals of Culture for the years 2020 to 2025.

Further information on the forthcoming host city can be found on Kaunas’ official event website. Further information on Beatriz’s work is available on the ICC staff page and on Beatriz’s personal website.
