Cultural Transformations – What’s Next? The final evaluation of the impacts of Hull UK City of Culture 2017

This event is on 19 November 2019

In 2017, Hull’s year as UK City of Culture prompted the delivery of a one-year, place-focused cultural programme designed to be a catalyst for long-term transformations. With the remit to address deep-rooted challenges for the cultural sector, local economy, wellbeing and place making, a City of Culture designation comes with high expectations. For Hull the outcome was a cultural year defined by multiple successes. Two-years on the task ahead is to maintain the momentum and there are lessons to learn for Hull and for policy makers and other cities aiming to host future UK City of Culture or other cultural mega events.

The University of Hull’s Culture, Place and Policy Institute have led the evaluation of the impacts of UK City of Culture 2017. The conference will see the release of the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 final evaluation report, along with a stimulating programme of insight and debate.  Over three days, delegates will revisit the notion of culture-led urban transformations, encompassing perspectives from academics, practitioners, policy makers, funders and community members, and firmly embracing an international outlook.  Questions about immediate impacts sit alongside the investigation of longer-term implications, and the conference explores the challenges for Cities of Culture to keep the transformative momentum going.

Reflections are offered by Oonagh McGillion (Derry City & Strabane District Council), Claire McColgan (Culture Liverpool) and Martin Green (formerly Hull 2017 Ltd).

Keynote speakers, including film-maker, Sean McAllister and Professor Lynn Froggett (Professor of Psychosocial Welfare, University of Central Lancashire), join panellists from academia and the cultural sector, to consider issues for future urban cultural strategies, ranging from social equity to nurturing local talent and grassroots-led policy-making.
